Street hawking ban: Government make first arrests in Lagos

The police in Lagos State have arrested no fewer than ten street hawkers in Maryland, Oshodi, Ikeja, and Ojota areas of the state.
They were arrested for violating the law prohibiting street hawking on Lagos roads.
Recall that the state government had banned the activities of street trading and street hawking.
Ambode had said the activities of street traders and hawkers would attract a fine of either N90, 000 or a six month jail term.
This came after the incident that saw a street hawker, who was evading arrest by Kick Against Indiscipline, KAI, officials, knocked down by an articulated vehicle at Maryland Bus Stop on Wednesday.
Reacting to the arrests, the KAIMarshal General, Mr. Amusat Jimoh, told newsmen on Monday which marked the first real day of the law in effect, that the members of KAI arrested offenders and that they would be prosecuted following the renewed enforcement which is in line with Section One of the Lagos State State Street Trading and Illegal Market Prohibition Law 2003, which restricts street trading and hawking in the metropolis.
